Having just a email/password and verify you are human login, is not secure, for hackers. Heck, maybe not even your siblings. The main reason that these others are being included, is b/c the banks themselves ask for it, and thus if you participate in that part of the site, you will need to comply. But, it is a good security option and easy enough to expand that way as well. Which helps show that things are being done. For members from IndIa  PAN Card (issued by Govt of India) is an important document for identity proof. PayPal is asking for PAN Card details for Account verification. PAN Card  have Name, Photo, Date of Birth etc. Hope it too would be considered as one of the ID  proof  to members from India. [For many persons from India Last name is shown in abbreviation as 1 or 2 letters in Documents such as PAN Card. However I have to wonder where all this info will be stored, and how do we know that our identity wont get stolen. If you want to know it's the same person then have them put today's paper on a scanner along with their ID. So, I got the impression that we needed 1 thing from each of those 4 lines. Usually, we see lots of different things qualify for Proof A and lots of other things qualify for Proof B. For me, that usually boils down to Driver's License (A) and Birth Certificate (B). Esp since the first line is just our full name, and he only said Utility Bill (not other Bills), which I know Utility Bill was something I had to struggle with to show proof of where my car was parked. Like anything to do with the car and (license, registration, insurance). Off the top of the head, can't think of others. But these were used only for offline official reasons. Another one, when I lost my SSN, I needed to use this proof as well. The images are stored in Amazon S3, and there is no way to access the images via a public link. Once users upload an image they can't see it anymore from their profile. The only way to access the images is via a very specific link that expires after a certain time, and it also requires a special token + a signature. Even from our admin panel these links to images are constantly changed. We'll also be updating our TOS and Privacy policies ASAP to reflect this latest addition of information collecting. You will understand the full meaning of selfies when we add the "MTV/PV card" addition to it. It will basically be a guarantee showing that the user is fully aware of what he/she is putting money into, which will be our primary tool of fighting any potential chargebacks when direct credit card deposits are introduced. Even with the initial implementation, the selfie/picture will serve as a link between the ID and the person submitting it. It seems excessive, but you won't believe how reckless people are in getting their personal information stolen, and a "selfie" (or in some account hijacking cases we even required a short/live video of the person to confirm them as the real owner) is an additional way of making sure that the person behind the computer is also the person on the ID submitted.
