Is it just me or are there too many altcoins being developed thus diluting the market? I would support an international law capping the number of allowed crypto currency coins. 20 should be more then sufficient.

Okay I guess I am an oddball here as well. Perhaps 1 million different cryptocoins are what you seek. Have fun with that.

@kyerby

There are a lot of coins because there are lots of people trying to solve a problem, creating business or trying to change something that they think is wrong. It's up to people to decide what to buy, use, support, promote, develop. Can you imagine the internet with 20 sites? The world with 20 big stores?  ... The more coins there are, higher the chance of one of them is actually being usable outsite the crypto-world.

But I do agree that many are there for no reason, that just exist because people want to get a x10 with their money, especially most ICOs nowadays. Have you seen how many coins exist for a "Digital Bank" or "lending programs"? It's unbeliavable how fast these icos get money with the promise of a working product by 2150 xD

20 years ago crpyto currency did not even exist. I fear is spiraling out of control if unlimited numbers of coins are created. Limiting internet websites is different. That is censorship and elimination of free speech, commerce, expression etc

I do not wish for the market to become so diluted that all the currencies become worth less then a penny. I have seen predictions Bitcoin will one day reach a million dollars per. Will be interesting to see if that happens. Was $500 when I started earning micro fractions of it. I still only possess a fraction of one but its value has gone up significantly in the last 12 months alone.

Why limit a sector of revolutionary technology?
The market will sort itself out.
Shitcoins will crumble, actual technology will prevail.

Right now we're in the mania phase, everything can earn you money.
It's usually followed by a crash and then the actual technology will stand out and find its way up.

20 projects would be WAY too little.
There are at LEAST 20 use cases for blockchain technology and competition keeps the market healthy and is good for progress.

Actually there are some in the USA who have considered banning altogether the trade and usage of all virtual currencies. I disagree with that and am glad it is not the prevailing opinion. I do agree that many of the coins will probably end up junk status.

It was exactly like this with the internet in the '90's. You should have seen the sites compared to today. Most sites and site builders used paint. That is where the altcoins are today. People developed and innovated and we have high end HD 3d content at the push of a button. Things will shake out but it will take time.

Sit back and witness history in the making

I have been active on the internet since the mid 90's and remember those days. My brothers 2 gigabyte hard drive was state of the art. Then again I remember the at its time state of the art apple 2 E CPU. It had color on screen! Going back further I remember not having a remote control to change the 5 tv channels I might receive depending upon conditions of the signal despite an antennae on the roof. Cell phones did not exist. Video games cost 25 cents a play in a thing called an arcade. Yes it is amazing how far things have progressed. The fact that I can even type here and people around the world can see it is amazing. Used to be a very expensive long distance phone call to ever contact anyone outside of your country or rely on postal mail correspondence.

@kyerby

The last thing you, or anybody should want is to have laws and governments messing with this.

With the upcoming introduction of the RFID chip and the moneyless economy, the world will be full headed into an elite dictatorship, where some obscure government official could erase all your money in just a snap of their fingers, so you would want to keep open as many spaces of freedom as you can.

As an American I strongly support freedom. It is a fundamental value of the USA. The thought of a global dictator makes me cringe. You do make a good point as in many cases I believe the government, at least in my country; has too many regulations that hinder economic growth and success.

Wasn't 2017 the year of the ICOs already? There've been lots of them, and governments start to act on/control them. I'm not sure they'll be the biggest thing next year, but let's see... I wonder which "new" coins will get a lot of attention. This year definitely was a big year for Ripple (XRP), from an unknown currency to a huge market cap. What'll be the next one is the question, buying that one may make you so much money...
